My research program is in the area of materials chemistry with an emphasis on nanoporous materials and materials at high pressure.  Projects encompass both the synthesis of new materials as well as the application of materials in a novel way. Materials synthesis conditions span the spectrum from room temperature-atmospheric pressure to high temperature (>1000 °C) – high pressure (> 10 GPa). The compositional scope of the materials synthesized and applied in my labs ranges from organic to organic-inorganic hybrid to inorganic. The materials are focused on energy-related applications with a broad scope ranging from more energy-efficient gas separations, to more energy-efficient synthesis of high pressure phases, to materials that consume less energy in mechanical (cutting, drilling, polishing etc) and electronic applications (power electronics and optoelectronic materials), to electrodes, to solid electrolytes. I consider my research program diverse and interdisciplinary integrating aspects of organic, inorganic, electro-, and physical materials and solid state chemistry.
