Science Journalism: How to Talk to Reporters About Your Research

Abstract:
Lauren Wolf got hooked on chemistry and on science writing, all while an undergraduate at Lehigh University. Today, she heads the science desk at Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), the American Chemical Society’s news magazine. She manages a group of reporters who cover cutting-edge research and trends in the world of chemistry. And she oversees the magazine’s multimedia efforts. After leaving Lehigh with a master’s degree in chemistry, Lauren earned a Ph.D. in bioanalytical chemistry at Boston University and carried out a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Standards & Technology studying nonlinear spectroscopy. She decided to make the switch to journalism while standing in a dark laser lab at NIST, alone—again. It was then that she remembered the taste of science writing she got at Lehigh, and realized what she really enjoyed, aside from actual human contact, was telling people about science and the wonders of the molecular world. She joined C&EN in 2008 and has been there ever since.
